A fire pit is a handy thing to have when you want to sit outside in the summer and not be bitten as much by bugs. We are enjoying our newly created but not finished workshops and picnic area.

Cottage Garden - July 20, 2011

We have been designing an area of our property for a workshop for Danny and a cottage garden for myself. The land has been cleared and the site prepped.

The builder arrived this afternoon to begin building and plans to finish in two days.

The cottage garden is a style of garden that evokes images, from the quaint garden but tends to be glorified, as if it stepped out of the pages of a fairy tale or a Thomas Kinkade painting. In reality, it will be a useful style of garden and will adapt to our lifestyle of simple but functional living.

My concept of the cottage garden is defined as a "small, humble dwelling with a place for the cultivation of flowers and vegetables. It would include gardens with a few flower beds throughout the yard, around a tree and a rectangular vegetable bed, plus a picket fence.

It is fun to visualize and create this project.

The area in front of Danny's workshop will be an entertainment area with a picnic table, wooden chairs and grill/barbeque pit. We look forward to the summer evenings, building a fire in the fire pit, grilling for dinner and sharing the days events with family and friends.

July 18, 19, & 20 2011

Monday 18th -The weather has heated up after the 4th. Today was hot, humid, and 83 degree Farenheit in Eastport with a slight breeze.

Tuesday 19th - Another warm and humid day forecast. It was 85 degrees in Calais at 3:00pm when we went shopping but cooled down to 73 when we arrived in Eastport at 4:30pm.

Wednesday 20th - Woke up to a world of difference temperature wise. I sat on the deck drinking coffee at 6:30am enjoying the cool temp which dipped to 49 during the night. I love living on the coast. If you don't like the weather, just wait a day or two and it changes.

Today was about 75 with a nice breeze and even milder evening. Just lovely after hot and humid.

July 4th 2011

The tourists have arrived and it's old home week in Eastport in addition to the July 4th festivities.

Moose Island Trolley from Seaview Campground. Danny and I sitting in window 1 and 2...I am waving with the flag.

July 2011

The month of July brings warmer days and nights. The patio garden is looking good and summer flowers are in full bloom.

June 2011

The month of June is still cool nights but warmer days. The garden does not like the cool temps at night. I need to replant the basil.

The days are longer with earlier sunrise. We are clearing our property to build a picnic area for the summer. We are looking forward to his and her workshops and to have more storage space.

I am busy at work with charges & billing for the publication of the summer guide in addition to the Quoddy Tides newspaper....double work means longer hours. Bahumbug!!!

April & May 2011

Just when we thought spring had sprung, mother nature gave us snow on April 1st and that's no joke. It has been a long winter with back to back snow that piled up to 4 to 5 feet. Just when it started to melt, more snow.

I have seen enough snow and ready for winter to be over but it looks as though mother nature has a different mindset. Although, the daffodils and tulips are peeping through.

The month of May is still cool, 30 -40 at night with 50's during the day. Spring showers are here. Hum...I thought April showers brings May flowers.

I think we are skipping spring this year or maybe this is a long spring and late summer. I bought garden vegetable plants but should have waited. My basil does not like the low temps. I planted 120 onion bulbs. The spring flowers are in bloom....daffodils, hyacinth, tulips are beautiful.

The end of May and still cool at night. I planted a patio garden rather than feed the deer. We have tomatoes and herb pots.

March 2011

The month of March came and went too fast. Danny and I flew to Florida and drove up to Georgia on March 21 for my niece Joy's wedding. The wedding was outdoor in a field facing a lake. It was beautiful even with an afternoon 4:00 shower. The bride took all in stride as you can tell in the photos. The next day after morning breakfast with my sisters, Danny and I drove to Florida to visit with my son Rudy for a few days before flying back to Maine.
