How My Garden Grows on August 19th

I picked yellow squash today and made a squash casserole...a favorite of Danny and my son, Rudy. I wish they were here to enjoy it. I will share it with friends.

Protecting My Garden

I haven't had much success protecting my small vegetable garden from the deer this summer. They jumped the small wire fence to eat the tops of the tomatoes and blooms, then started on the green pepper leaves. So, I tried two scarecrows...they ignore them too.

Wednesday August 11th

Today, I sent a formal letter of resignation to Mr. McCabe, Principal of Clay High School. I am not returning to Clay High this year. You know you need a change when your spirit is screaming to you to stay where you are happy. I needed a changed and will look for a job here in Maine. Danny is planning to retire too and will be here at the end of October 2010 unless he finds a job sooner.
I am officially retired...it feels good.

My days are filled with keeping my cottage clean, working in my yard and flowers, tending the small vegetable garden, meeting friends for lunch each Thursday, visiting with a recovering sick friend and taking her to yard sales and lunch on Saturday's, working on the serving line at the Sea-View Campground, picking blueberries, making pickles, and enjoying the beautiful summer days of Maine.

Tuesday August 10th

Today, Danny found out that he did not get the math coach job at Pleasant Point Indian Reservation. He was disappointed and I told him to keep the faith...God knows his heart and his talents and will open a different door.

I read in the Quoddy Tides, Eastport town paper, that a full-time GED teacher was needed on Campobello Island. I sent him an email.

He has said in the past that he wanted to get a boat...about 20 minutes across the bay to Campobello is the shortest route.

School Starts in Florida

Saturday August 7th- I took Danny to Perry Corner to catch the Coastal Bus at 10:00sm that ends up at the airport in Bangor about 1:30 or so. Danny has a flight back to Florida...he hated to leave but he promised to work for Laura the first week of school because she booked a cruise to Alaska before the school calendar was changed.

A friend, Jamie and I went to several yard sales and had lunch at New Friendly Restaurant in Perry. It was a beautiful day, sunshine and warm but not hot about 78 degrees with a breeze.

In the evening, off to Sea-View Campground to work the serving line outside under the pavilion. An all you can eat Fish Fry (fresh haddock).

August 6th - Trip to Lubec and Campobello Island

We can see the bridge to Lubec on a clear day if you drive past our house, up High street to County Rd. It is closer to Lubec by boat than to drive but we have no boat, yet. We drove to Lubec and ate lunch at Frank's downtown, crossed the bridge at customs check onto Campobello Island. It was a warm, humid day with rain in the forecast.

August 2nd - Blueberries and August 3rd - Pickles

I wanted to pick blueberries to make blueberry preserves. We scouted the area around Eastport and found an abundant field behind the elementary school in Eastport. We picked 4 cups and I made blueberry pancakes for breakfast the next morning. I need about 6-8 cups for preserves...I will try again in a few days to pick more.

August 3rd
Picked cucumbers from the garden and made pickles.

Trip to Bar Harbor

Danny wanted me to experience Bar Harbor, eat lunch at Gerry's and go to Cadillac Mountain. I do not like crowds or lots of traffic but wanted to drive through and look...not into shopping today... wanted to eat lunch and visit Cadillac Mountain.

Our waitress at Gerry's...lunch was very good...Mexican Pizza...delicious. Time for a change from all the seafood.

July 30th - Grand Lake Stream

Today, Danny and I drove to Peter Dana Point, about 51 miles from Eastport, to Indian Township School for his interview with the Principal Terry Lux. The interview went well. I met Terry afterward, very nice lady, and Danny got good vibes from her about the job. We will have to wait to hear from the superintendent about the hire, who is on vacation this week.
Grand Lake Stream is close by and Terry recommended we drive there to look around. It is a small village with a general store/post office and very charming. The awesome lake...

July 23rd Danny comes Home to Maine

I picked Danny up in Bangor today...he finished his summer session at school and is looking forward to two weeks of R&R out of the Florida heat. His flight was on time...11:30am...we had to wait for his luggage and then set out for the airline road to drive home to Eastport.

We are planning a trip to Bar Harbor in a few days after a few days of lazing around the house and working on a bit of maintenance to the cottage.

Tomorrow we attend a Laua pig roast at the Seaview campground. Danny has a couple hours of basting the pig from 4:00 to 6:00am and I work on the serving line starting at 5:00pm...it will be a lot of fun...laughing with new friends, joking, dancing and drinking beer. We bought Danny a Hawaiian shirt and I found a cute dress to wear. Of course I forgot my camera so I need to get some copies from Sue Lara at Seaview...she posted the pictures at the campground.
